Bringing natural light into a basement.
When the client appointed me at the beginning of this project his main concern was how to increase natural light into the basement where he was planning to house a wine cellar, a billiard's room, a gym, a TV room and storage space for his tools.
My first task was to continue the stairwell which run through the centre of the house into the basement, to allow continuous circulation through the property.
Then, I introduced a light well system connected to the rear garden through an external staircase that I design.
The idea was to extend the garden into the basement and we achieved it by introducing a green wall feature onto the vertical surface facing the basement wall.
I also designed 3 walk-on glazed roof lights, one above the stairwell and the others above the gym and the TV area, which gave the whole area ample natural light.
After the Planning application approved in March 2017, SGBC London Ltd. completed the 100 Sq.m basement extension in 2019 to an excellent standard.
